Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is rapidly cementing its position as one of the world’s key technology players in the artificial intelligence (AI) race. Long known for its high-performance processors and graphics cards, the company is now expanding its influence in data centres, cloud computing, and AI infrastructure — areas traditionally dominated by competitors like NVIDIA and Intel.
When looking at the AMD AI developments in 2025, the company announced several strategic developments that have reshaped its outlook.
The company entered a multi-year partnership with OpenAI, under which it will supply AI chips designed for large-scale model training and inference. The agreement also includes an option for OpenAI to acquire up to 10% of AMD, linking the two companies’ futures more closely in the fast-growing AI sector.
At the same time, AMD unveiled its next-generation MI300 and MI350 accelerators, alongside upcoming MI400 chips, which are expected to compete directly with NVIDIA’s data centre GPUs. These products form the backbone of AMD’s plan to offer an end-to-end AI ecosystem, combining CPUs, GPUs, software, and networking technologies.
Furthermore, the company’s commitment to openness also stands out.
Its ROCm 7 software stack, part of the open-source AI framework, allows developers to optimise AI workloads without being locked into a single vendor’s ecosystem. This approach has gained traction among enterprises seeking flexibility and cost efficiency.
Financially, AMD continues to show growth despite external challenges. Its Q2 2025 results revealed strong gains in data centre and AI revenue, supported by steady demand for Ryzen processors and Radeon GPUs.
AMD AI developments: Analysts expect total revenue to reach around US$40 billion by 2026, provided its AI business continues to scale.
However, the company faces headwinds. U.S. export restrictions on AI chip sales to China could cost AMD an estimated US$1.5 billion in revenue this year. Production capacity and supply chain management will also be crucial as AMD seeks to meet growing global demand for AI hardware.
Nevertheless, AMD’s AI efforts extend beyond the chip itself. The company recently entered a US$10 billion collaboration with HUMAIN to deploy 500 megawatts of AI compute infrastructure globally over the next five years.
Additionally, its strengthened partnerships with Red Hat and other enterprise software leaders are enabling broader adoption of AI in hybrid cloud environments.
From a strategic perspective, AMD’s goal is clear: to become the major supplier in global AI infrastructure by focusing on scalability, openness, and performance. While NVIDIA remains the industry leader, AMD’s renewed focus on collaboration, competitive pricing, and open architecture gives it a distinct advantage in markets looking to diversify their AI supply chains.
Looking ahead, the rollout of the MI400 series and the company’s ongoing partnership with OpenAI are expected to define AMD’s next chapter. If successful, these moves could see AMD transition from a challenger to a central force shaping the future of AI computing.
In terms of market outlook, analysts project that AMD’s share price could continue to perform strongly over the next two years, with estimates ranging between US$280 and US$320 per share by late 2026, depending on execution and AI sector demand. The company’s expanding role in data centres, strong product roadmap, and increased institutional investment are expected to sustain its momentum, provided it manages production capacity and regulatory pressures effectively.
